How to Read Slot Meters
Reading and interpreting slot machine meters is a fundamental skill for advantage play. Here is what you need to know.
Types of Meters
Progressive Meters: Display a dollar amount that increases with play. Found on the machine's top box or main screen.
Counter Meters: Display a count of collected items (buffalo heads, coins, symbols). These track progress toward a feature trigger.
Hidden Meters: Some games track progress internally without a visible display. These require knowledge of the game's mechanics.
Finding Meter Values
- Top Box: Look at the physical display above the reels — most MHB progressives show the current value and the must-hit-by ceiling here
- Main Screen: Some games display progressive values on the main game screen, often at the top
- Info Button: Press the info/help button on the machine to find meter rate information and progressive rules
- Pay Table: The pay table often lists progressive tiers and their ranges
Understanding Meter Movement
- Meter Rate: The amount you must wager for the meter to increase by $0.01
- Typical rates: $1.50 to $5.00 per penny of meter movement
- Higher denominations: Usually have faster meter movement per dollar wagered
- Linked vs. standalone: Linked progressives move faster due to multiple machines contributing
Reading Must-Hit-By Values
MHB progressives typically display:
- The current jackpot value (changes in real-time)
- The must-hit-by ceiling (fixed, usually displayed nearby)
- Sometimes multiple tiers (Mini, Minor, Major, Grand)
What to Look For
- High meters: Closer to the MHB ceiling = potentially +EV
- Multiple high tiers: If several progressive tiers are elevated, combined value may create +EV
- Counter progress: For counter-based games, more collected items = better opportunity
- Time of day: Meters are often highest after peak playing hours
Common Mistakes
- Confusing the current value with the must-hit-by ceiling
- Not accounting for meter rate in calculations
- Ignoring base game return in EV calculations
- Playing a high meter that is still mathematically -EV
