Must-Hit-By Progressives
Must-Hit-By (MHB) progressives are the bread and butter of slot advantage play. These are progressive jackpots that are guaranteed to trigger before reaching a specified ceiling value.
How MHB Works
Every MHB progressive has two key values:
- Current Value: What the meter currently reads
- Must Hit By: The maximum value the jackpot can reach before it must trigger
The jackpot is programmed to trigger at a random point between a hidden minimum and the must-hit-by ceiling. As the meter climbs closer to the ceiling, the probability of it triggering on any given spin increases.
The Math Behind It
The standard baseline assumption is that the trigger point is uniformly distributed in the remaining range between the current value and the must-hit-by ceiling. Under this assumption, the expected hit point is the midpoint — halfway between the current value and the ceiling.
Example (uniform distribution):
- Current value: $480
- Must hit by: $500
- Expected hit point: $490 (midpoint)
Important Disclaimer
The midpoint method is a baseline assumption, not a guarantee. Some game implementations weight the distribution toward the ceiling (top-heavy), meaning the jackpot is more likely to trigger near the must-hit-by value than near the bottom of the range. Others may use different distribution shapes entirely.
What this means in practice:
- The midpoint gives you a reasonable starting estimate
- Some games may be slightly more favorable than the midpoint suggests (top-heavy distribution)
- Game versions, software updates, and regional configurations can change the distribution
- Always verify conditions with the specific machine and version you are playing
When Is It +EV?
A MHB progressive becomes +EV when the cost to play to the expected hit point is less than the expected jackpot value minus your losses on the base game.
Factors that determine profitability:
- Proximity to ceiling: Closer = better
- Meter rate: How quickly the meter moves per dollar wagered
- Base game return: Higher base game RTP means lower net cost
- Bet size: Affects your hourly cost and time investment
Common MHB Games
Popular MHB progressive slot families include:
- Ainsworth: Many titles with visible MHB ceilings
- Light & Wonder: Various progressive series
- AGS: Multiple MHB-style jackpots
- Konami: Several counter and MHB variants
Tips for MHB Play
- Always calculate before sitting down — use the MHB Calculator
- Know the meter rate for the specific game and denomination
- Factor in base game return — typically 85-90% for most slots
- Have sufficient bankroll — variance can be brutal short-term
- Time your visits — meters climb throughout the day, peak values often found in morning hours
